Bristol’s Premier Heavyweight MMA Fighter

James ‘The Colossus’ Thompson has long been a name to reckon with in MMA.

One of the premier heavyweight English fighters, he currently trains at Trojan Fitness in Ashton Vale, Bristol.

He had his first professional bout in 2003, after which he contested fourteen bouts with only two losses.

Although MMA hasn't always gone his way (between 2006 to 2010, Thompson yielded just three wins from fifteen fights), the Bristol-based fighter has proved that you should never give up after completing a run of five successive wins last year.

What's special about James Thompson?

What sets The Colossus apart is that he goes far beyond the MMA fighter trash-talk and goes about things with a great sense of humour.

In a compelling hour-and-three-quarter-long interview with Brian Rose on London Real TV in 2013, Thompson talks about his MMA career and life journey, and in doing so demonstrates a remarkable intelligence and depth of self-knowledge.

Amongst the topics under discussion are bigorexia (also known as 'muscle dysmorphia' or 'reverse anorexia') and Thompson's controversial 2008 fight against Kimbo Slice (some feel it was fixed).

Thompson also opens up about the mistakes of his early career, imparting three lessons to the audience:

  • The importance of striking a balance between muscle mass and strength training.

  • Nurturing an ability to detach the fighter from life outside the ring.

  • Why you need to take your own path and regulate your fear - Thompson adopts a rigorous 'never tap out' mindset whenever he enters a fight.

The whole Tigon team will be keeping eyes wide open for this Bristol’s heavyweight’s next MMA battle!
